We rounded out the weekend with the second of our two full-day rehearsals. Answering our director’s call for rolling office chairs, I felt obligated to offer my slightly worn but serviceable model up for service, so I carefully loaded it into the back seat of my Rambler, tanked up with gas, and brought it along to the Shadbolt Center. Thus, I’m now about a foot lower than usual as I write this recap, sitting on a repurposed kitchen chair instead. Please excuse any resulting typos.
The Shadbolt Centre in Burnaby is the site of the rest of our rehearsals as well as the show itself. This being my fourth APPLAUSE! show at the Shadbolt, it was like settling back into familiar turf. In previous years, APPLAUSE! bounced around to a variety of venues, including the Roundhouse and the ScotiaBank Dance Centre, but at this point seems to have made a permanent arrangement with the Shadbolt. Less convenient for me as a West End guy, but better for the shows as it provides a stable home as well as ready access to a huge audience of theatre-hungry suburbanites. Read Part 3!
In an APPLAUSE! show, Saturday is our first all-day rehearsal, one of two on the weekend. Being that I’d be downtown all day, and being that it was a clear sunny morning, I left the Rambler at home and biked it. That meant a quick and pleasant ride through the quiet Saturday morning streets. Read the rest of this entry »

Read Part 2!
Too tired to write much tonight. Let’s just say a fun time was had by all, and a milestone was reached - we’ve now learned all the music! Well, all the group numbers that is. Which is everything there is to learn for the chorus. (The principals have their own solo numbers pretty well sorted out too!)
Let’s make this more of a photo blog today. On with the pictures and funny captions! Scroll down, or view all the pics on Flickr. Read the rest of this entry »

Read part 1
Last night, it was all about the music. Tonight, that was still the case for the first 15 minutes, during which we ran through our two big group numbers that we’d “put on their feet” last night. Turns out they were still standing - for the most part. Things sounded good. So we moved on to the main task of the evening: staging!

Our director really pushes his actors! See more photos.
An APPLAUSE! show is closer to a recital than a full staging. But we still try to get the essence of the scene’s setting across. So what do you do when your show involves bank robberies, nuclear reactors, radiation shields, and exploding buildings - and you have no sets? You use a little creativity. It’s more powerful than Kryptonite! Read the rest of this entry »

Tonight was the first rehearsal for APPLAUSE! production of “It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superman”! I’ve done a whole slew of APPLAUSE! shows - more than any sane person should, really - but they’re so much fun I just can’t stop, and happily they keep inviting me back.
This time around, I thought I would report on the experience of performing in one of these one-week wonders. An “insider’s view” if you will, of how a show like this gets put together. It’s such a unique and fun experience - hopefully there will be amusing tales a-plenty to share. So, here goes! Read the rest of this entry »

>This is amazing! And it’s happening tomorrow - Friday, August 3!
The Fifth Avenue Cinemas (Fifth and Burrard) presents a sing-along showing of HAIRSPRAY with the lyrics right up there on the screen, printed on the film! OMG!
Everyone also receives a collectible card, and gets a chance to win a HAIRSPRAY soundtrack CD.
OK people. I know there are TONS of musical theatre fans out there. And there are a lot of Broadway Chorus folks who have sung some of these songs with me on stage! Let’s turn out in force and REPRESENT!!!
There is a 6:50 and a 9:20 showing. I think the 9:20 might be best to give more people time to get out there. (Though personally I could go to both of ‘em!)
Are you with me? Let me know! And remember…
YOU CAN’T STOP THE BEAT!!!!!!!
