This musical and educational event is held at the Alice Mackay Room of the Vancouver Public Library’s main branch and is offered to the public free of charge.

Evil Film School

7:30 pmto11:00 pm

I’m definitely planning to check this out: a monthly screening of cheesy, trashy movie “classics”. As they describe it on their site: “a mishmash collection of found footage, bootlegs, cinema obscura and local shorts because this city is sadly in need of an alternative film night.”

The event is held at Blim, 197 East 17th @ Main.

Coming up on Friday, April 27, it’s “Psych-Out!”, a double bill of 60’s excess.

7:30pm: BJ Lang Presents aka The Manipulator [1971] - Mickey Rooney is an old Hollywood make-up man/frustrated actor who loses it and kidnaps a woman so he can subject her to his special brand of “acting”. Much scenery chewing ensues…

9:15pm: Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Foget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness? [1969] - Written, directed by and starring Anthony Newly (who, you say?), it also stars Joan Collins as “Polyester Poontang”. Regarded by some as one of the worst examples of self-indulgent ’60’s filmmaking.

Sounds like fun - I plan to be there. Let me know if you do too!

Edwin Drood

A Victorian vaudeville murder mystery where YOU decide whodunit!

I am pleased to announce my participation in this latest APPLAUSE! Musicals production. Presented for the first time in the Lower Mainland, this Tony-award winning musical dares to tell the story of Charles Dickens’ novel of the same name. Daring, as the book remains unfinished, due to the author’s death in 1870 halfway through its writing.

The resulting show is a wonderful blend of ribald comedy, compelling mystery and lively music, as we are transported back to the 19th century and meet the members of the Music Hall Royale in London, who present us with their latest show - “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”. The story is told with tongue firmly in cheek, as the characters are revealed, and the devilish plot is unfurled. The actors of the Music Hall Royale step in and out of character, engage (and harangue) the audience, and – when they run out of story – enlist the audience to decide who the murderer is (and even if there has indeed been a murder!) There’s much cheering, plus booing and hissing of villains.

It’s all great fun, tons of laughs and sure to be a memorable evening at the theatre.

I hope you can come out to the Shadbolt to see me and the rest of this talented cast in The Mystery of Edwin Drood!

Pantages Theatre tourIf you’re interested in theatre, Vancouver history and heritage restoration, community-building, the future of the Downtown Eastside, or all of the above, then come on down to the Pantages Theatre for one of their tours of the interior of this historic Vancouver structure, which is being restored to its original glory. See for yourself the reasons for the excitement about its planned restoration and re-opening – which will hopefully occur by late 2009 or early 2010.

The tour will take place on Saturday, November 25th at 2 p.m. Please feel free to invite other friends who may be interested in seeing the Pantages. Dress warmly as the theatre is without heat.

Here’s photos of a previous tour I took in January of this year.

The Pantages is located at 150 East Hastings Street (one-half block west of Main Street) in Vancouver. Here’s a map.

VIFF: Colma, The Musical

October 9th, 2006
October 9, 2006
9:30 pm

I will be seeing this film on Monday, October 9th 9:30 pm at the Pacific Cinematheque.

Colma is a bedroom community of San Francisco, shrouded in fog and ennui, and home to Maribel, who just wants to get laid, Billy (a wannabe actor) and Rodel (a soon-to-be gay runaway). Each must face the challenges of adulthood through song (some 13 original musical numbers are featured) in this almost ridiculously fun film. “A giddy unexpected pleasure.–LA Weekly
