Two very different musical offerings in this week’s update! First up is Sumida Gawa / Curlew River, the combination of Western opera and Japanese dance which my friends at City Opera Vancouver are putting on starting tonight. Then for something completely different, a sneak preview of The Broadway Chorus’ show for summer 2010: Priscilla, Queen of the Damned, coming in June (and including myself as “Yuri”!).

The only connection between these two wildly different shows, perhaps, is the men-in-drag element. “Sumidagawa” maintains a historic/cultural tradition of men playing all the roles, and “Priscilla” features three drag queens in a battle against vampires. However, the drag queens’ costumes feature WAY more glitter…

It’s drag queens vs. vampires in “Priscilla, Queen of the Damned”!

Transylvania’s only modern musical theatre group battles the undead in this uproarious mashup up of musicals and monsters. It takes a queen to fight a queen, so when the Vampire Queen next door abducts the second soprano section, a trio of cross-dressing crowd-pleasers turn hero and wage war.
