You may have attended our comedy, The Lost Operas of Mozart, with Bramwell Tovey. Or have seen our dramatic tragedy, Missing, by Marie Clements and Brian Current. Or both.
We now invite you to Nigredo Hotel – a bizarre black comedy, an operatic thriller, and a project unlike any we have done before. It stars baritone Tyler Duncan, and soprano Sarah Vardy.

NIGREDO HOTEL is a brilliant Canadian chamber opera, in one act. With music by Nic Gotham, and libretto by Ann-Marie MacDonald, it depicts an encounter between a beautiful but crazed woman who runs a shoddy hotel, and a brain surgeon who takes refuge there after he crashes his car. It is brilliant combat between two of the most unusual characters in 20th-century opera.
"Blazingly visual… an extraordinary work… beautifully performed." -- The Scotsman, Glasgow
“One of the best nights of bad sleep you’re likely to experience” -- Toronto Star
The music? Strong. Driving and tonal, jazz-inflected and satirical, beautifully conceived for the human voice, and all backed by a four-player combo.
“Nigredo made a big impact on the Canadian opera scene. It played to non-traditional audiences (at the Tarragon Theatre, no less), and proved that you didn't have to break the bank to do something topical and original. It won awards and traveled to Britain. It made chamber opera seem hip.” – Robert Everett-Green, The Globe and Mail
Stage direction by Alan Corbishley, lighting and sets by John Webber, costumes by Barbara Clayden, sound design by Malcolm Dow – and inspiration from Carl Jung.
We look forward to seeing you, and thank you for reading this.
