Dear Picks People… after this instalment my picks will be on hiatus for a couple of weeks as I will be away.  I will try to add some more events before I leave.  I am sure you will survive and keep yourselves entertained!  Don’t forget about Winter Jazz on Granville Island Feb 23-25. One important and amazing annual fundraising event I want to draw your attention to is Atira’s Strong Women, Strong Music which will be at Frankie’s Jazz Bar for 3 nights on March 8, 10 and 11. A different line up of Vancouver’s finest female musicians each night. Get your tickets early as it always sells out.

Rio Theatre – Living on Soul

LIVING ON SOUL is a hybrid docu-concert film featuring the late Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley and the rest of the Grammy-nominated Daptone Records family. Filmed largely during Daptone’s December 2014 three-night, sold-out residency at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem, the documentary features a mixture of live performances and verité scenes that paint a robust picture of the Daptone family and culture.  Tickets $10 advance/$12 at door

The 4th in the JOY OF JAZZ CONCERTS series featuring vocalist Karin Plato performing with two truly distinctly different musicians: guitarist/vocalist Michael Averill and clarinetist James Danderfer. Michael is a beloved “troubadour” with a soulful honest voice and adept guitar grooves. He has traveled and toured the country performing his brand of folk, roots and blues based music winning new fans with each performance. James is an acclaimed jazz instrumentalist, composer, recording artist and band leader. His star keeps rising and he is truly a musician of note (of many notes!) in our country.  Cover $15 at the door.

Shadbolt Centre- pataSola Dance with Salome Nieto

This event runs from February 21, 2018 until February 24, 2018.

pataSola Dance, a local dance company, will be performing Metamorphosis Butoh at the Shadbolt Centre from Feb. 21 to Feb. 24. Choreographed by Gustavo Collini in collaboration with pataSola Dance co-founders Eduardo Meneses and Salomé Nieto, the piece derives its name from the Japanese genre of dance, butoh, as well as the subject the performance’s main themes: rebirth, death and the struggle of life itself. Emily Carr University -Visual Art Forum: Shawn Hunt Free event

An artist talk with Shawn Hunt. Shawn Hunt is an artist of Heiltsuk, French and Scottish ancestry. He has a diploma in studio art from Capilano college as well as a BFA from the University of British Columbia where he majored in sculpture and drawing. Shawn comes from a family of artists. His father is Bradley Hunt, a prominent Heiltsuk artist with whom he apprenticed for 5 years. Shawn also did an apprenticeship with Coast Salish painter Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun. Shawn’s work takes on a complexity of influence from both his training in traditional Heiltsuk design, wood carving, jewelry carving and painting and his engagement with contemporary questions of subversion, preconception and fluid meanings.

As a youngster Ray Ayotte began playing drums for rock bands he formed with schoolmates. Throughout his early playing days, Ray made little adjustments to his kit and learned that other players enjoyed the changes and sounds he could make. He dreamed of one day making his own drum set. Pacific Cinematheque – Out There: The Visionary Cinema of Nicholas Roeg

On the occasion of his 90th birthday this year (salut, Nic!), The Cinematheque presents a select retrospective of Nicolas Roeg’s daring, dangerous, censors-be-damned films. Winter Jazz at Granville Island February 23- 25 Free event

This event runs from February 23, 2018 until February 25, 2018.

Coastal Jazz presents a free concert series on Granville Island featuring seven local and international groups, including Scandinavian jazz quintet Atomic, bassist Jodi Proznick, singer-songwriter Marin Patenaude, roots rockers the Sumner Brothers, vocalist Alicia Hansen, Thelonious Monk-inspired jazzers Monk’s Music, and indie fave Jasper Sloan Yip.

St.Paul’s Labyrinth – Johanna Hauser By Donation

Vancity Theatre – The Insult

A Christian homeowner and a Palestinian contractor but heads and the matter goes to court. Frankie’s Jazz Club – George Colligan Trio featuring Buster Williams & Lenny White

This event runs from February 23, 2018 until February 24, 2018.

New York multi-instrumentalist George Colligan is one of the most original and compelling jazz artists of his generation. For this current project he is touring with two legends of music. Bassist Buster Williams is one of jazz’s most valuable bass playing sidemen. Drummer Lenny White has collaborated with many of jazz music’s greatest artists such as Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, and Joe Henderson. $25 cover.

His began with busking his way through Canada and the NYC subways, playing over 150 shows a year to enthralled audiences. Agnès chose cinema. JR chose to create open air photography galleries. When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to work together, to shoot a film in France, far from cities, during a trip in JR’s photographic (and magical) truck. Tickets $10/12
