Jeni’s Picks for the week aheadDear Picks People… we are all in need of some events to help ward off the rainy day doldrums I think! Suggestions herewith. Hopefully spring will arrive some day soon. Also, a reminder that Coastal Jazz has started to post events for the 2018 Vancouver International Jazz Festival (June 22-July 1). As usual some of these will sell out very early so get your tickets before they are gone! More info here As usual, before you venture out, please check with venues for any last minute changes/cancellations. Enjoy!! Vanity Theatre – FoxtrotMarch 26, 2018 6:30 pm
Rated 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, but less popular in Israeli government circles (Israel’s Minister of Culture condemned the film when it won the Grand Jury Prize at Venice in the fall of 2017), Foxtrot is a truly extraordinary work from Samuel Maoz, the director of Lebanon. It is a film about grief. Michael and Dafna are stunned when army officials show up at their door – the movie’s very first shot – to inform them their son Jonathan is dead. What follows falls into three main parts: the immediate aftermath of the news, with all its horror and rage, is succeeded by a very different and weirdly compelling flashback to Jonathan’s military posting at a remote, isolated checkpoint… And the final section, about which the less you know in advance, the better! An otherworldly instrument with an affecting vibrato, it’s a voice that’s earned repeated comparisons to the great Roy Orbison, and even briefly had Williams, in his youth, consider a career in classical singing, before realizing his temperament was more Stratocaster than Stradivarius. “Make Way for Love”, Williams’ sophomore album was released in February of this year. The photographer, illustrator and designer Cecil Beaton was an unabashed aesthete, a dandy and a terrible snob. His glamour shots of Hollywood stars are as famous as his production designs for Gigi and My Fair Lady, but this candid doc also shows his war photography and the artist’s waspish and melancholy sides.
