Vancouver Foreign Film Society presents the Dutch Film “Waterboys” Unceremoniously dumped by his wife, Dutch crime novelist Victor decides to attend a book launch in Edinburgh and to bring along his grown (but equally dumped) son, Zack. If the trip is meant to repair his bruised ego and regain his boy’s respect, well, it’s not exactly smooth sailing. But the prospect of seeing his favourite band from the 1980s playing live (Mike Scott’s The Waterboys) at least holds out the promise of a happy ending… A humorous, not entirely affectionate portrait of male hubris, Waterboys is keenly observed and beautifully acted. Writer-director Robert Jan Westdijk subtly brings out both parallels and points of departure between father and son, while the Scottish locations and several rousing Waterboys anthems imbue the movie with its own raggedy romanticism.
