As usual please check with venues for changes to schedule.   2018 Vancouver Fringe Festival September 6-16 This event runs from September 6, 2018 until September 16, 2018. The Vancouver Fringe is a celebration of all kinds of theatre. Produced annually by the Vancouver Fringe Theatre Society over 11 days in September. 700+ performances and  that fill theatres big and small on and around Granville Island and East Vancouver, not to mention a few site-specific works in the most unexpected spots. Info and schedule here Vancity Theatre – My Generation September 10, 2018 8:25 pm Presented by Michael Caine, and often in the first person (though the script is credited to those Likely Lads, Dick Clement and Ian Le Frenais), this is a bright and breezy retread of the revolutionary decade when, briefly, Britannia got her groove back and London was the most happening place on the planet. Granted, it’s not exactly an untold story, but Batty’s entertaining doc benefits from first hand anecdotes by an all-star cast of actors, models, photographers and rock-n-rollers, among them Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey, Twiggy, and Marianne Faithful. Company B Jazz Band is Vancouver’s foremost vintage jazz harmony group. In their 10+ years as a band, this talented group of musicians has delighted audiences from all walks of life, from coast to coast to coast. Swing, swing, swing. They are at Libra every Monday until Oct 8 prepping for a trip to China. Guilt & Co – The JD Organ Trio Pay-what-you-can September 10, 2018 9:30 pm The JD Organ Trio is a Vancouver-based group led by Jason de Couto on Hammond B3 Organ, featuring Kelly Brown on Guitar, and Justin James on Drums. They have come together to form a unique and dynamic sound seldom heard in Vancouver, featuring the mighty Hammond Organ. The group plays a mix of Jazz, Funk, Pop, Latin, and Blues music, with influences ranging from Jimmy Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Jimmy McGriff, to Larry Goldings, Sam Yahel, and Joey deFrancesco. Movies in the Morgue – The Blues Brothers September 11, 2018 7:00 pm Movies in the Morgue is BACK Bringing you high speed chases, heists, and lots and lots of cars! To start off the season  the cult classic “The Blues Brothers”. Sent on “a mission from God” these two zany brothers set off on a wild adventure to raise $5000 dollars to save the orphanage they grew up in. If you’ve seen it, you know you want to see it again. If you haven’t – here’s your chance! Bring your pillows and blankets to cosy up in the morgue. Fresh popcorn and pop for sale. Doors open at 6:30pm and movies start at 7:00pm. Tickets are $10.00 WISE Hall – Christie Rose & The Bottom Shelf Bourbon Trio Pay-what-you-can September 11, 2018 8:00 pm A Tuesday night double bill, featuring Christie Rose and The Bottom Shelf Bourbon Trio, down in the WISE Lounge. From a cheeky turn of phrase, to the ache of love and loss, to the vivid beauty and plain revelation evoked by small details, Christie Rose‘s lyric-driven songs tread a varied range of observation and human emotion. The Bottom Shelf Bourbon Trio is a genre-bending roots music duo.  Anchored between the lowdown grit and growl of country blues, the high lonesome sounds of bluegrass, and early jazz, their music explores universal themes of substance abuse, infidelity, blue-collar angst, unrequited love, and wanderlust. Emma Citrine – experimental music. The versatile and excruciatingly intimate journey of this Vancouver-born songwriter weaves unvarnished emotion together with the raw vitality of indie music Curtis LeBlanc’s debut collection, Little Wild, was published by Nightwood Editions in April 2018. His poems have won the Readers’ Choice Award in Arc’s Poem of the Year competition, Honorable Mention in the Margaret Reid Poetry Contest, and have been shortlisted for The Walrus Poetry Prize and CV2’s Young Buck Poetry Prize. All other performances are at the WISE Hall.  See events calendar here.   Roedde House – John Stetch and Jodi Proznick September 13, 2018 7:00 pm John Stetch (piano) & Jodi Proznick (bass) Pianist John Stetch pushes the edges of his jazz and classical training to fuse melodies from around the world; from Mozart to Ukrainian folk music to TV themes.  Stetch started piano late, at age 19, and is now a Steinway Artist and a 6-time Juno nominee. Stetch has played at the top New York clubs – Mezzrow, Smoke, Birdland, the Jazz Standard and just released his 15th CD – Vulneraville: The Vancouver Concert. Juno-nominated bassist, composer, producer and educator Jodi Proznick is Canada’s finest jazz artists has won numerous National Jazz Awards, including Bassist of the Year in ’08 and ’09. Ilhan’s playing ability is very versatile;  Jazz, Rock, Funk and Latin music. Ilhan’s piano style is reminiscent of classic piano players such as Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson and is heavily influenced by modern jazz players such as Brad Mehldau. He now composes complex modern jazz arrangements. $10 at the door Robson Square – Market Mexico Free event September 15, 2018 11:30 am A free outdoor market experience in the heart of downtown Vancouver on Mexican Independence Day. Market staples such as tacos, tortas, and elotes (Mexican corn);  sweet treats like horchata, pastries, and churros; aguas frescas, agave spirits, and micheladas in the cantina; plus Mexican-inspired artisanal items, clothing, and crafts.
