The Cultch – A Vancouver Guldasta October 9-13

This event runs from October 9, 2018 until October 13, 2018.

Written and Directed by Paneet Singh. A Vancouver Guldasta focuses on the Dhaliwals—a Punjabi family in Vancouver in the early 1980s—as they navigate through the experience of trauma and violence occurring in Punjab, and their daughter’s complicated friendship with Andy, a Vietnamese refugee teen who lives in their basement. The story takes place during the Indian government’s armed invasion of the “Golden Temple”—the holiest shrine of the Sikhs—in the epicentre of the Sikh diaspora, South Vancouver, BC, Canada. A Vancouver Guldasta is an examination of common experience, identifying home, and processing trauma. Post Show Q&A following each performance Tickets $40   ** some dates already sold out

Tuesdays at the Gold Saucer Studio.   New Music by CAT TOREN w/ Josh Zubot (Violin) & Katie Rife (Vibraphone) JOHANNA HAUSER and FRIENDS (Improvised Music, Clarinet, Spoken Word) **This show is a fundraiser in support of clarinetist Johanna Hauser, found guilty of ‘criminal contempt’ for blocking work on Kinder Morgan pipeline. She and fellow musicians and arrestees will tell their stories in words and music with proceeds going to the Raven Trust Defence Fund. With First Nations drummer and arrestee Stacy Gallagher, free improv Bassist Torsten Müller, and arrestees Tama Ward and Simin Tabrizi.

Red Lion – Ron Johnston/Cameron Hood & friends By Donation

This event runs from September 28, 2018 until October 26, 2018.

Piano refurbished and with an updated sound system, Ron (piano)  & Cameron (bass) are back every Friday playing an eclectic assortment of jazz tunes. A rotating list of friends drop by and sit in…. often, but not always, vocalists.

This event runs from October 12, 2018 until October 13, 2018.

A Re-Imagining of the Classic Joe Cocker Album Featuring Matt Andersen, CR Avery, Steve Dawson, Roy Forbes, Rich Hope, Khari Wendell McClelland, Ndidi Onukwulu and Dawn Pemberton. House Band: Jeremy Holmes bass, Geoff Hicks drums, Liam MacDonald percussion, Chris Gestrin keys, Malcolm Aiken trumpet, Dominic Conway saxophone and Jerry Cook saxophone In 1970, the late, great Joe Cocker released the rollicking live album Mad Dogs & Englishmen, a classic revue-style extravaganza featuring a great mix of Cocker’s original material and some of his signature covers of rock and soul including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, and Otis Redding. For the 4th edition of our Steve Dawson led artist celebrations, Mad Dogs seems an ideal choice for the annual mash-up of local and visiting artists re-imagining iconic albums. Tickets from $56

Tyrant Studios -Ardeshir’s Standards Trio

Ardeshir Pourkeramati is a multi-instrumentalist, currently living in Vancouver. Having studied under the well-known saxophone wizard Stan Karp, he received his bachelor’s degree from Capilano University’s jazz studies program.   Ardeshir’s versatility has led him to playing in different musical groups spanning  several genres (jazz, funk, rock, pop, etc). Aside from being a sideman, Ardeshir also leads his own jazz group, in which they play his original compositions and arrangements. Cover $10

Western Front -PUGS & CROWS with Marin Patenaude UNCLE! album release

On their fourth full-length album UNCLE!, Vancouver indie rock jazz art folk instrumentalists Pugs & Crows join forces with vocalist Marin Patenaude. Patenaude’s earthy, soulful voice coupled with the band’s trademark cinematic pacing, melodicism, and gritty elegance transports the music to new heights.
