Rio Theatre – Black KkKlansman

December 17, 2018 6:15 pm

From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee and the producing team behind GET OUT comes another provocative exploration of American race relations – and an incredible, true story of an American hero. Set in the midst of the 1970s civil rights movement, the film follows Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), determined to make a name for himself as the first black detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department. He sets out to prove his worth by infiltrating the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, and convinces his more seasoned, Jewish colleague (Adam Driver) to go undercover in the brave and dangerous investigation of a lifetime – as a white supremacist. Tickets $10.50/$12.50

Vancity Theatre – Roma

December 17, 2018 8:20 pm

Highly recommended.  Mexico’s Alfonso Cuaron’s thrillingly diverse career encompasses everything from Gravity to Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to Y Tu Mama Tambien. Roma is his masterpiece. An evocation of middle-class household in Mexico City in 1970 (Cuaron would have been nine years old at the time), this scintillating black and white film focusses on Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a live-in maid, who tends to the two children, cleans and cooks, and observes, discreetly, as her employers’ marriage falls apart. But Cleo’s own love life is just as fraught… Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in September, and placing in the top 3 in TIFFs’ Audience Awards, Roma has received rapturous reviews from the critics and is being touted as a serious prospect for Best Picture in the Oscars race.  Tickets $13/11 ** Showing multiple times until January 3 but several days already sold out.  Book early!**

Faded Daisy diva, Esmé Massengill, plays the role of miserly, drunken, bitter Esmé Scrooge, encountering all your Daisy favourites (as Dickens’ familiar characters!) on her journey to redemption. A raucous, adults-only holiday treat, Little Dickens combines Burkett’s mastery of marionette puppetry, playful songs, and improvisation!… Tickets $24-59 Review here
