The JD Organ Trio is a Vancouver-based group led by Jason de Couto on Hammond B3 Organ, and features Kelly Brown on Guitar, and Justin James on Drums. All three members are versatile and active musicians and work within a variety of ensembles in the local music scene. They have come together to form a unique and dynamic sound seldom heard in Vancouver, featuring the mighty Hammond Organ. The group plays a mix of Jazz, Funk, Pop, Latin, and Blues music, with influences ranging from Jimmy Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Jimmy McGriff, to Larry Goldings, Sam Yahel, and Joey deFrancesco. Vancouver Foreign Film Society presents The Guilty This taut, claustrophobic thriller from debuting director Gustav Möller gives us disgraced cop Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren, on-screen throughout and masterful) who, for some on-the-job screw-up initially unknown to us, has been relegated to the emergency services call room, a job he detests. One night, he takes a call from a woman who is in the midst of being kidnapped, and things descend into chaos very quickly. As he races against time to save her–while never leaving the confines of the call room–the camera stays at his side, immersing us in a tense cat-and-mouse game in which we, the audience, come to identify with our beleaguered protagonist. Möller’s brilliantly controlled camera prowls around capturing Holm’s mounting distress as secrets are revealed–the film does not lack for surprises–and hope begins to fade. Given its superbly gripping qualities, it is hardly a surprise to learn that Möller’s film continues to capture audience awards at festivals around the world. PuSh International Performing Arts Festival brings groundbreaking work in theatre, dance, multimedia, music + film. This year’s festival from January 17 to February 3, 2019, at various venues across the city, will showcase 26 works from 24 companies from 13 countries – including Canadian premieres from half-way across the world: sound-based works from Japan by ASUNA, Marginal Consort, and Tetsuya Umeda; Dancenorth Australia with music by Indonesian band Senyawa; and a piece from Taiwanese choreographer Liu Kuan-Hsiang. Sticks & Stones Theatre present The Open House by Will Eno People have been born into families since people started getting born at all. Playwrights have been trying to write “Family plays” for a long time, too. And typically these plays try to answer endlessly complicated questions of blood, duty, inheritance and responsibility. They try to answer the question, “Can things really change?” People have been trying nobly for years and years to have plays solve in two hours what hasn’t been solved in many lifetimes. This has to stop. In Eno’s signature, inimitable style, The Open House offers a wildly subversive and darkly hilarious take on the archetypal family drama. CD RELEASE: CANNONBALL ADDERLEY: SWINGIN’ IN SEATTLE, LIVE AT THE PENTHOUSE This marks the release of a historic recording from the late Cannonball Adderley. Released on Vancouver’s Reel To Real Recordings Ltd., Swingin’ In Seattle: Live At The Penthouse finds the quintet at the height of its powers mere weeks before they would go into the Capitol Studios and record “Live At The Club,” that yielded the hit Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. A hard swinging band including the drummer on the Swingin’ In Seattle date and the only living member of the original quintet, drummer Roy McCurdy to celebrate this historic release.
