Joseph Blood: A rock’n’roll maverick with a heart of gold, a sensitive songwriter with a winking spirit, a joyous tornado of philosophical musings and thirsty abandonment. Frankie’s Jazz Club – Michael Zilber Quartet

San Francisco-based saxophonist and composer Michael Zilber has been a part of the stellar New York scene, but his roots will always be in Vancouver. Zilber has been described by NEA Jazz Legend David Liebman as “one of the best players and composers around anywhere. Period!” and All About Jazz raves “Zilber is one of the true masters of modern jazz saxophone.” In this, his only Vancouver show of 2019, he is joined by Seattle greats Marc Seales on piano and Jeff Johnson on bass, as well as Vancouver’s Bernie Arai on drums. Cover $17.50

Juno nominated guitarist/composer Bill Coon co-creates a book of new songs with acclaimed Vancouver vocalist and performer Laura Crema. This group’s intention is to create a unique juxtaposition of beautiful sounds while nurturing playful interplay between its members. Laura and Bill have been co-creating a book of new songs that speaks of their love of creating mood and feeling through melody and lyrics. Museum of Anthropology – Marking the Infinite

Rio Theatre – V6A (with director Q&A)

Italian filmmaker Ruggero Romano has called Vancouver home since 2016 and after witnessing the struggle of homelessness, poverty and addiction in his adopted city, was moved to make a film about the inhabitants of postal code V6A – the area commonly known as the Downtown Eastside. Designed to challenge expectations and inspire locals to think about their fellow citizens in a new light, V6A is also an unexpected celebration of the resilience and beauty of the human spirit. In the search for truth and authenticity, the film explores human nature in its fight against the toughest, often man-made odds by questioning the definition of “home.” Q&A with Ruggero following screening. The great American composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Moira Smiley will present her solo show “The Voice Is A Traveler”, interweaving arresting original songs with American and European folksongs that speak of journeys and border-crossings, both geographical and metaphorical, and with stories that underscore the longing that drives the peripatetic life. Frankie’s Jazz Club – Christie Grace “Clouds Illusions” An evening of Joni Mitchell Classics

“Cloud’s Illusion’s” explores many beloved Joni Mitchell classics honoring Canadian poet Joni Mitchell’s 75th birthday, celebrated on November 7, 2018. Christie Grace’s original “Joni Mitchell Tribute” for Mitchell’s 60th debuted in 2004 at Cory Weed’s Jazz Cellar to three sold out houses and rave reviews from the Georgia Straight. Fifteen years later she is delighted to once again share her eternal love of Mitchell’s poetic genius along with several new arrangements. With Daryl Jahnke on guitar (original Joni Mitchell band), Dan Reynolds on piano, Conrad Good on bass, and Buff Allen on drums. Cover $16
