Pacific Cinematheque – Carmine Street Guitars

Spend an heavenly summer week hanging out at an artisanal guitar shop in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village in this charmer from director and pop-culture chronicler Ron Mann (Comic Book Confidential, Twist, Grass), one of Canada’s most dependable documentarians. Ron Kelly crafts exquisite custom guitars using old wood salvaged from historic Gotham buildings. His shop is an outpost of vintage New York bohemia and character in an area of rampant gentrification and homogenization. Prominent musicians and artists — including Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Bill Frisell, Eleanor Friedberger, Nels Cline (Wilco), Charlie Sexton, Kirk Douglas (The Roots), and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch — drop by to check out Kelly’s wares, swap stories, and share a song. Meanwhile, Kelly’s 93-year old mom keeps the books and answers the phone, and his young apprentice, Cindy Hulej (a rare woman in the field), hones her skills.  Tickets $13/$11

Frankie’s Jazz Club – Greta Matassa

This event runs from April 12, 2019 until April 13, 2019.

One of the most talented singers working in jazz today, Greta Matassa has been voted Northwest Vocalist of the Year by Earshot Jazz seven times in 15 years, and was honored with a lifetime achievement award and inducted into the Earshot Jazz Hall of Fame in 2014. A mainstay on Seattle’s jazz stages, Greta has released eight albums on the respected jazz label Origin Records. Her latest, I Wanna be Loved, (Resonance Records) released to critical acclaim. With Nick Peck piano, Jodi Proznick bass, and Julian MacDonough drums. Tickets $20

Kevin Mooney Firehall Concert Series – Jim Byrnes By Donation

A unique series dedicated to the memory of Vancouver’s treasured music fan and promoter Kevin Mooney.  These all ages concerts located in various Vancouver or North Vancouver Fire Halls are free. Please bring donations for the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund. This month at Firehall #18 … blues legend Jim Byrnes Registration not required but please arrive early as space is limited at the halls. Entrance to the concerts will be first come, first served. ALARMS MAY INTERRUPT THE CONCERT. The musicians will do their best to continue. The Firefighters will be as quiet as possible as they hurry away.

Vancouver’s most cosmopolitan street – Commercial Drive – is the nexus for Carolyn Combs’ compassionate and heartfelt ensemble drama, a film about home, displacement, community and solidarity. Unfolding over a single day, the film hinges on Constanza (Carmen Aguirre), a Chilean refugee, and her relationship with her daughter. But this is just one thread amidst an Altmanesque carnival of artists, activists, hustlers, and coffee house consiglieri, all converging on the Drive. Viva East Van! Frankie’s Jazz Club – from Brooklyn:Miles Okazaki’s Trickster

Guitarist Miles Okazaki’s approach to the guitar is described by the New York Times as “utterly contemporary, free from the expectations of what it means to play a guitar in a group setting — not just in jazz, but any kind.” His fourth album of original compositions, Trickster was released on Pi Recordings in 2017, making best-of lists on Pop Matters and the Los Angeles Times, and was an Editor’s Pick at both Downbeat and JazzTimes. The Brooklyn-based Okazaki’s versatile virtuosity has seen him partnered up with such wide-ranging artists as Steve Coleman, Kenny Barron, Vijay Ayer, Donny McCaslin and Mark Guiliana and Mary Halvorson, but his intricate, complex, and individualistic compositions seem fresh and enjoyable, while still showcasing the incredible skill of this crack band.
