Sadly, Merge has to leave its current space and will be gone by June 1:(  Only a few more weeks to get out and support this collective.

But, both Jazz Festival and Folk Festival are coming up.  Line ups have been announced and tickets are on sale.  Plan ahead and don’t miss out!

Rio Theatre – Carmine Street Guitars

Amidst the gentrification of  Greenwich Village custom guitar maker Rick Kelly and his young apprentice, Cindy Hulej, build handcrafted guitars out of reclaimed wood from old hotels, bars, churches and other local buildings. Nothing looks or sounds quite like a Rick Kelly guitar, which is the reason they are embraced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, and Jim Jarmusch, just to name a few. Featuring a cast of prominent musicians and artists, the film captures five days in the life of Carmine Street Guitars, while examining an all-too-quickly vanishing way of life. 100 Filipino Film Series presents “When The Storm Fades”. In the Reliance Theatre at Emily Carr. An affecting, provocative docudrama from artist/activist Sean Devlin, a Filipino family and their neighbours reenact their own experiences of resolutely rebuilding their homes and lives in the wake of the devastation wrought by 2013’s Hurricane Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms in history. Jazz Evensong – Miles Black plays Oscar Peterson’s Easter Suite By Donation

Italian Cultural Centre – Ancient Women in Textile : Exhibition Opening Free event

The exhibition’s opening night will be held within the museum.  Light refreshments will be served. Admission is free. Ancient Greek mythology attributes feminine virtue to textile production, from thus the two become interwoven to form contemporary archetypes in art, and society”. In The Odyssey, the figure of Penelope preserves her chastity, while her husband fought in the Trojan War, by weaving day and night. This enabled her to avoid the advances of suitors who wanted her kingdom, her fortune and her hand. The figure Aracne, was turned into a spider for spurning the advances of the God Apollo. Lastly, the virgin warrior the Goddess Athena oversaw textile production among moral women. The artist Ruth Scheuing re-examines these legendary women and brings these heroines to life in a medium intrinsic to their stories: the textile.

Fox Cabaret – Tony Wilson Looking Back

Tony Wilson’s Looking Back is a multi-media event featuring a 14-piece ensemble along with narrator, dancer and video projections. The text is taken from Wilson’s memoir of the same name, about an 18 month period when he was incarcerated at the St Joseph’s Training School for juvenile delinquents. Twenty years after he was released from the school, many of the brothers who ran the school were charged in court, with several being sentenced to jail for physical and sexual abuse. Bringing this painful history to the stage is an amazing array of Vancouver’s finest performers: Patsy Klein -vocals, Brad Turner -trumpet, Josh Zubot, Jesse Zubot, Meredith Bates and Cam Wilson – violin, John Kastelic and Sarah Kwok – viola, Peggy Lee and Marina Hasselberg – cello, Tony Wilson – guitar, James Meger – bass, Dylan van der Schyff – drums, Barbara Bourget – dance, Michael McNamara – narrator, Giorgio Magnanensi – electronics.
