Also recommending this one… Â PUSH, The Film. Housing prices are skyrocketing in cities worldwide. Longtime residents are pushed out. Not even nurses, policemen and firefighters can afford to live in the cities that they are supposed to protect. This is not gentrification, itâs a different kind of monster: Housing as a financial asset, a place to park money.
Havana Theatre – Call Mr. Robeson
May 7, 2019 until May 9, 2019NOW IN ITS TWELFTH YEAR!!
âThey say Iâm meddling in the foreign affairs of the United States Government. Now, thatâs too bad, âcause Iâm going to have to continue to meddle…â
Paul Robeson was a world-famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner. When over the years he gets progressively too radical and outspoken for the establishment’s liking, he is branded a traitor to his country, harassed, and denied opportunities to perform or travel. Just as physical, emotional and mental stress threaten to push him over the fine line between genius and madness, he is summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee, to give the most difficult and important performance of his career.
This roller-coaster journey through Robesonâs remarkable and eventful life highlights how his pioneering and heroic (but largely forgotten) political activism led many to describe him as the forerunner of the civil rights movement. It features much fiery oratory and some of his famous songs, including a dramatic rendition of Olâ Man River.
Tayo Aluko revives one of the 20th Centuryâs most impressive but overlooked figures in this powerful, compelling tour-de-force performance, which was seen at New Yorkâs Carnegie Hall in February 2012, and in Londonâs West End in October 2013. Â $15/20 at the door May 7-10

The Gam Gallery – Get Lost North Free event
May 10, 2019 7:00 pmOpening night of the exhibition “Get Lost: North”
Last year, the Open Sky Gallery in Fort Simpson NT invited a group of Vancouver based artists and musicians to travel to the Northwest Territories. The occasion? The opening of a new exhibition, Voices of the Elders, which featured works of art by Dene artists and craftspeople. Two artists (Michael Shumiatcher and Melenie Fleischer) and two musicians (Eric Wilson and Dan Séguin) flew from Vancouver to Yellowknife and then drove 600 km due west to Fort Simpson, where they spent a week in conversation with a group of Dene artists.
Now the Gam Gallery has invited Open Sky to send the works of two northern artists – Jeneen Frei Njootli and Agnes Mitchell – to our exhibition Get Lost: North, which will also feature paintings and photographs inspired by last summer’s journey to Fort Simpson. Opening night will include a performance of “Dehcho: A musical journey along the Mackenzie River” by cellist Eric Wilson and composer Daniel Seguin, as well as poetry readings by the Pandoraâs Poetry Collective and a performance by electronic soundscape artist Peki Hajdukovic.
