Kuya Quartet explores music from the Philippines; folk melodies, classics from Filipino composers and new originals inspired by the genre. A veritable plethora of possibilities for re-imagined and adventurous interpretations. Noriega’s first foray into this concept materialized into his 2006 award-winning piano trio release “Alay.” Kuya Quartet is a continuation of this journey with a new band, different instrumentation, and a fresh take on the traditional. Rio Theatre – J.T. Leroy

LEROY (co-written by Knoop) tells the story of one of a genuinely bizarre, captivating tale, going beyond the headlines to tell the story of the most compelling literary ‘hoax’ of our generation. Laura Albert (Laura Dern) writes as her “avatar,” a disenfranchised young queer man named JT LeRoy. When her debut novel becomes a best-seller and JT becomes the darling of the literary world, she comes up with a unique solution to preserve her anonymity but give life to her nom-de-plume.  Tickets $10.50/$12.50 Read review here

Vancity Theatre – Starfish

May 23, 2019 8:30 pm

This visually and sonically gorgeous indie proves just how much can be accomplished by a filmmaker of vision. Aubrey is mourning her best friend, Grace, in the sanctuary and solitude of a smalltown apartment when the end times break out with a vengeance in the form of enormous alien creatures bent on destruction. Luckily, Grace has hidden clues about the town on cassette tapes: This Mixtape Could Save the World, says one. It sounds bonkers but this weird, original little movie is memorably melancholy and quietly assured. The fine soundtrack (including cuts by Sigur Ros and Sparklehorse) carries it over the line.
