![]() Vancity Theatre -Cold Case HammarskjöldAugust 19, 2019 3:30 pm
In this jaw-dropping and ultimately blood-chilling expose, film agent provocateur Mads Brügger (The Ambassador) digs into the mysterious death of the second United Nations Sectretary General, Dag Hammarskjöld in 1961. Hammarskjöld, “the greatest statesman of our century,” per President John F Kennedy, was an outspoken critic of colonialism. His death in a plane crash in Zambia was certainly convenient for those invested in stripping Africa of its resources, and Brügger locates witnesses who suggest the plane was shot down. But his investigation goes in circles, and midway through the film he is on the point of abandoning it. That’s when he stumbles across a secret that makes political assassination look almost quaint in comparison. Sadly coinciding with the passing earlier this week of the Nobel prize-winning novelist, this is an artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the Belovedwriter. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University.
