Frankie’s Jazz Club – Tribute to Sonny Rollins: Dave Say Quartet

September 7th is the birthday of legendary jazz tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Acknowledged as the genre’s greatest living improviser, Rollins has played music for over 70 years—beginning as a teenager with icons like JJ Johnson and Bud Powell. In the ‘1950s, he was a sideman for Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis and then joined the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet. He also teamed up with John Coltrane for the recording Tenor Madness. Join the Dave Say Quartet as they pay tribute to Sonny’s Saxophone Colossus album. Cover $10

Vancouver Fringe Festival September 5 – 15, 2019

The Vancouver Fringe Festival is an annual celebration of Theatre for Everyone!  2019 will feature more than 700 performances by over 90 artists over 11 days from September 5 – 15 in various theatres. The Festival employs an “everyone welcome” selection technique—the Mainstage shows are literally drawn out of a hat, giving all artists a chance to participate.  The Vancouver Fringe Festival also features unique site-specific theatre where artists stage their work in the nooks and crannies of Granville Island.

Edmonton based trumpeter Eric Weiden, has enjoyed performing all across Western Canada leading small groups as well as performing with various big bands including Vancouver Legacy Jazz Orchestra, Calgary Jazz Orchestra, and the Yardbird Suite Jazz Orchestra. This performance will pay tribute to the legendary saxophonist and composer Oliver Nelson and features Cory Weeds on tenor sax, Sharon Minemoto on piano, Paul Rushka on bass, and Bernie Arai on drums. Not only will Graeme Coleman’s music be in a more traditional format than usual, the audience will witness vocalist Joani Taylor’s induction into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame. That’s right, she’s getting a long-overdue star on the Walk of Fame on Granville Street.
