Dear Picks People… thought I had pressed “send” before I went to the memorial for Keith Bennett. Another stalwart of the Vancouver music community lost this year.  He will be greatly missed. RIP Keith. Apparently I messed up so here is the list a bit late.

Cafe Deux Soleils – VLAFF End of Year Party

The Vancouver Latin America Film Festival will throw a last party for 2019, coinciding with the visit from Mexico City of ESPANGLISH (a recently formed band led by Alfredo Fernández from the cult band Mamá Pulpa). There will also be a screening of MARIA OF THE MANGROVES (Colombia), the short film that received the Special Mention at the festival this year Tickets at the Door: $15/$12 (All proceeds from tickets sales will go to support VLAFF bringing more artists and filmmakers to Vancouver in 2020)

Tyrant Studios -Gentiane MG Trio

Montreal pianist Gentiane MG was named Révélation Jazz Radio-Canada in 2018-2019. Gentiane MG Trio’s first album of original music, entitled Eternal Cycle, was classified among the 10 best jazz recordings of 2017 in Canada by CBC Music. The band just released their second album, Wonderland, and will be touring across Canada in November (Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Waterloo). Through her compositions and with the contribution of her longtime bandmates Levi Dover and Louis-Vincent Hamel, Gentiane presents an expressive and impressionistic universe that is constantly renewed through improvisation.  Cover $10 at the door Listen here

Guilt & co – Hot Jazz Wednesdays featuring Brad Shigeta By Donation

Brad Shigeta was a featured soloist with Duke Ellington Orchestra and Illinois Jacquet Big Band among others. His plunger style of soloing on the trombone is particularly unique and hard swinging. The Swingtime Band features two horn arrangements of great Basie and Ellington standards and is made for dancing (and listening)!

Architecture & Design Festival Nov 7-10, 2019

The Architecture & Design Film Festival will make its Canadian debut with ADFF: Vancouver from November 7-10 at two great venues: Vancity Theatre and the Scotiabank Dance Centre. The festival will celebrate the intersection of architecture, design and film with 25 films that highlight creative geniuses like Bruce Goff, Douglas Cardinal, Jørn Utzon and Phyllis Lambert. The program will also feature director Q+As, design-forward installations, and thought-provoking panel discussions with high-profile speakers and special guests.  **Opening Night with a screening of City Dreamers. Directed by Joseph Hillel, this film highlights four trailblazing female architects, and explores how their post-WWII contributions still inform our approach to city planning today. Schedule here

Frankie’s Jazz Club -From Montreal: Jazzlab Orchestra plays Félix Stüssi

The Jazzlab Orchestra is a Montreal-based ensemble of 8 musicians that have presented creative music since 2003 – the Orchestra celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year. This collective of artistic collaborators have produced many projects over the years with the top players of the Montreal jazz scene. Western Front -Double Bill: Cat Toren, Ayelet Rose Gottlieb & Pneuma

Ayelet Rose Gottlieb and Cat Toren return to Vancouver for a double bill, each with new music and new bands Pianist Cat Toren, originally from Vancouver and a member of the Juno-winning group Pugs and Crows, now resides in Brooklyn, where she is an active member of the avant-garde jazz community.  With violinist Josh Zubot and percussionist Katie Rife Vocal virtuoso Ayelet Rose Gottlieb’s voice twists and turns with edge-of-your-seat dexterity, a nice match for the trio of world-renowned clarinetists with whom she’ll be performing—Michael Winograd, James Falzone, and Vancouver’s own Francois Houle. The quartet performs as Pneuma, and will play work from their 2019 album Tickets $16    

Frankie’s Jazz Club – Hip Pocket Plays David Sanborn (with Dawn Pemberton & Mike Henry)

The 1970’s and ’80’s contained a wealth of great songs, some of which are well known and others that remain hidden gems and deep cuts. It was also an era of popular music that often included sax solos which raised the energy of these songs to the next level. Hip Pocket will be performing songs that alto saxophonist David Sanborn played on by artists such as David Bowie (“Young Americans”), Stevie Wonder (“Tuesday Heartbreak”), James Taylor (“How Sweet It Is”), Linda Ronstadt (“Ohh Baby Baby”), Kenny Loggins (“Heart To Heart”), Carly Simon, Chaka Khan, James Ingram, Al Jarreau and Jaco Pastorius to name but a few. The group will also perform instrumentals by David Sanborn and bassist & producer Marcus Miller as well as songs with vocals that appeared on Sanborn albums including familiar Rhythm & Blues and Soul classics by Ray Charles and Al Green. With Adam Rohrlick alto saxophone, Tilden Webb keyboard, Andreas Schuld electric guitar, Graham Clark electric bass, and Joel Fountain drums/background vocals, plus Dawn Pemberton and Mike Henry vocals. Frankie’s Jazz Club – Saul Berson plays Cannon Ball Adderley

From his earliest appearance on the New York jazz scene in 1955, alto saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley remained at the forefront of the jazz world. His blues-based tone, Charlie Parker-inspired modernist concepts, and African American religious themes helping to define several of the jazz trends of the postwar era. The quartet will play a compelling mix of original compositions and jazz standards of Adderley’s. With Saul Berson alto sax, Nick Peck piano, Steve Holy bass, and Bernie Arai drums. Cover $16

Help celebrate Sarah Wheeler’s birthday…and the release of Monica Lee’s new single Smokin’ Sarah Wheeler A queer artist and recent cancer survivor, Sarah is defined by power house vocals and an indomitable positive spirit. A blazing live performer. She has played as part of the 2018 Juno Awards, released three records, played in Tanya Tagaq’s band, recorded with A.C. Newman (New Pornographers), appeared in the film “Aim For The Roses” frequently airing on CBC, and played live with Dan Mangan. Monica Lee found out this year that she is deaf. She has been her whole life in fact. Like her you would probably never know it. Her voice is stirring, reminiscent of Carly Simon and Carole King. Beautiful, vulnerable yet still powerful Lee’s talent for songwriting and melody has developed despite her disability. After her friends cornered her and forced her to get her hearing checked she now hears a whole new kind of world. Lee’s songs share her unique point of view with all of us. *There are no tickets sold to this event but rather, there will be the opportunity to participate in the gift economy and support the artists at the event.
