Love,
Lust & Bread…
Vancouver, BC… Colourful characters,
a beautiful score, and French bread provide a recipe that will delight
everyone's palette when APPLAUSE! Musicals In Concert presents the
rare and delectable musical comedy The Baker's Wife by Stephen
Schwartz (music & lyrics) and Joseph
Stein (book) at the Scotia Bank Dance
Centre September 19 - 22.
The Baker's Wife is set in a quaint village in southern France and
tells the story of a baker, and his young new wife, who come to ease
the hunger of a village that has been without bread for weeks. All
is well - and everyone's bread and spirits are rising - until she
runs off with the town Casanova, driving the baker to distraction
and the villagers to breadlessness. The town's people then conspire
to rekindle the baker's lost love so they once again can reap the
fruits of the baker's oven. The Baker's Wife is a tasty parable about
the folly of infatuation and the perils of love.
Based on the 1938 film La Femme du Boulanger by Marcel Pagnol and
Jean Giono, The Baker's Wife originally opened in Los Angeles in
1976 on a pre-Broadway tour but never reached it's proposed destination.
Rarely produced, it has lived on with a small number of regional
productions, an original cast recording and a recording of the 1988
London production.
Joseph Stein won a Tony Award for his work on Fiddler
on the Roof and received Tony nominations for his work on Zorba and Rags (in
collaboration with Stephen Schwartz). Other credits include Enter
Laughing, Plain and Fancy and Ah, Wilderness. Stephen
Schwartz first
gained notoriety in 1971 with the music and lyrics for Godspell,
for which he won several awards, including two Grammys. Soon after,
Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics for Pippin. Schwartz's other
stage credits include Working, Rags, Children
of Eden and Wicked (presently on Broadway). Film credits include the Disney animated
features Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Dreamworks
film The Prince of Egypt.
The Baker's Wife is music directed by Kevin
Michael Cripps (Falsettos,
Baby, Honk) and directed by Peter Jorgensen (Berlin
to Broadway)
and features a large cast including David Adams (Evita),
Deborah Allman, Carrie Berg, Peggy Busch, Scott Carpenter, Rob Christensen,
Alexander Ferguson, Heather Guthrie Sheane, Jason Howell, Andrea
Marino, Mandana Namazi, Lannette New (Honk), John Payne, Scott Perrie
(The Fantasticks), Greg Pember, Matt Ramer, Arlene Roche, Allen Sawkins,
Stephen Street (Honk), Joel Smith, Andrew Toth, Mark Turpin, Elizabeth
Marie West (Crazy For You), and Sanders Whiting.
APPLAUSE! Musicals In Concert presents rare, shelved
and forgotten musicals "on book", staged with a full cast/chorus
and minimal production/technical elements. Further
