Well,
after already having celebrated, and after the good
news was spread about my first commercial, my agent
called me last night with some bad news... It looks
like the powers that be for this commercial have
decided to put it on the shelf. Translation: it
won't be airing. In fact, production has already
ceased.

Yes,
this was for the Public Service Announcement for Elections BC. Apparently,
their reason for stopping production was that it was too controversial.
Really! OK, I'll explain the ad a little first - it started out
with me signing, explaining that I was using sign language because
I'd lost my voice. And in the end I explain (by speaking) that by
registering and voting, we can get our voice back.
There were a few issues that led to the conclusion that this was
such a "controversial" ad. First, I wasn't hearing impaired,
yet there I was using sign language. Second, I was using plain English
sign language (meaning that I used a sign for every word, as a literal
translation), rather than ASL, which is more like a shorthand way
of signing. Third? Well, they just didn't think the public could
cope with such issues at this time. I'm sure there were also other
issues other than these, but the issues won... this time.

Needless to say, I'm quite disappointed. But the good news
is that I still had a fantastic audition, I booked the gig,
I had a full day's work, I did a great job, and I worked with
some very fun people. I'll rack this up as a good learning
experience. And who knows? They may decide to dust off the
footage in the future when they think the world is ready for
it. But for now, I'll concentrate on getting the next job.
Thanks for all the supportive messages I've received from
you guys. I love hearing from you! And, just so this newsletter
isn't just bad news, my friend, Adam, has posted pictures
of the Ovation Awards that took place last week. You can check
them out here
(there's
even a little video to watch!). |
