Vancity Theatre – And the Birds Rained Down

Living life like a fable, three aging hermits – Tom (Rémy Girard), Charlie (Gilbert Sicotte), and Ted (Kenneth Welsh) – dwell in a Quebec forest and spend their days tending to the cannabis crops owned by a their closest neighbour (Éric Robidoux) when not skinny-dipping. However, their idyll is disrupted by a sudden death in their chosen family and the arrival of two interlopers: a photographer (Eve Landry) with too many questions about a past tragedy and a senior woman (Andrée Lachapelle) with a surplus of secret. Louise Archambault’s long-awaited follow-up to Gabrielle is another crowd-pleaser anchored by uncompromising integrity and contagious affection for its characters. With this wonderfully rendered complement of players, she thoughtfully explores the rewards found and regrets harboured by those who’ve opted to live off the grid and find another way.   Tickets $13/$11

A quirky, art-jazz tour de force with nods to vintage jazz, trip hop, and modern indie showcasing a collection of joyous originals and masterfully arranged standards. Super, as she is affectionately known, is an award-winning vocalist with lots of heart. Her unique approach heralds powerful vocals exemplifying both the gentle and the strong, the light and the dark. Lithely navigating the colours of the emotional spectrum from despair to joy, deep blues to trip-hop confection, in an impressive 3 languages. This special concert concert showcases their 2019 album Worlds Apart, written by Superstein and arranged and produced by Shepherd. From Montreal with Remi-Jean Leblanc bass and Mark Nelson drums. Frankie’s Jazz Bar – Jeremy Pelt: The Artist

This event runs from January 17, 2020 until January 18, 2020.

Composing music inspired by painting dates back as far as the 12th century (Hildegard of Bingen) and, in jazz, Duke Ellington’s “Degas Suite” comes to mind along with Branford Marsalis’s “Romare Bearden Revealed.” But on his new album, Jeremy Pelt may be the first jazz artist to examine the relationship between music and sculpture. The five-movement “Rodin Suite” muses not only on works the French sculptor August Rodin left us, but how his art might have evolved if he were still with us today. With Jeremy Pelt trumpet, Chien Chien Lu vibraphone, Victor Gould piano, Richie Goods bass, and Allan Mednard drums.   Cover $30
