The Heatley – Adventures in Space Age Guitar #1: Surf and Twang By Donation

A new monthly series at The Heatley called “Adventures in Space Age Guitar” in tribute to various styles of music from the “Great Age of Guitar Exploration” (namely the mid 50’s to early 70’s). This month  will focus on the classic era of rock instrumentals in the early 60’s when Dick Dale, Duane Eddy and The Ventures ruled the airwaves. Expect some classics from those artists as well as tunes by Link Wray, The Shadows, The Chantays, Lonnie Mack and maybe even a song by Vancouver’s own Surfdusters. Rogue Folk Club – Louden Wainwright III

Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Loudon Wainwright III came to fame when Dead Skunk became a Top 20 hit in 1972. He had studied acting at Carnegie-Mellon University, but dropped out to partake in the Summer of Love in San Francisco, and wrote his first song in 1968 (Edgar, about a lobsterman in Rhode Island). His songs have since been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, his son Rufus Wainwright, and Mose Allison, among others.  During his long and illustrious career he has released 26 albums, m written film scores, a book and a theatrical show and is an accomplished actor with many film credits. The Jason Winikoff Quintet will present a diverse sampling of New Orleanian jazz from various points of the city’s rich musical history. Selections will include traditional barnburners made famous by the likes of Louis Armstrong and the ODJB, as well as contemporary compositions by Ellis Marsalis and Harold Battiste. The show will also feature modern tunes that have been heavily influenced by the Crescent City – revealing the city’s far-reaching impact on the greater jazz world.
