The world premiere of CHINATOWN opens on 13 September.
By librettist Madeleine Thien, composer Alice Ping Yee Ho, and translator Paul Yee, CHINATOWN is a love story, a tale of a great neighbourhood and its people, an examination of racism and resistance.

This is librettist Madeleine Thien’s first opera. Previous work received the Governor-General’s Award, the Giller Prize, the de:LiBeraturpreis, and the praise of Nobel Prize laureate Alice Munro: "This is surely the debut of a splendid writer. I am astonished by the clarity and ease of the writing, and a kind of emotional purity."
Translator Paul Yee’s earlier work has included the acclaimed Saltwater City, Jade in the Coal, and Ghost Train. He has received numerous honours for his writing, including the Prix Enfantasie, Kiriyama Prize Honour Book, and the Governor-General’s Award.
CHINATOWN has attracted tremendous interest and support. We expect its five-night run at the Vancouver Playhouse will sell out.
