Melanie’s Next Film

(August 1, 1999) - One of my most reliable sources reports the following: "Melanie Lynskey, who's about to hit the big screen again in "Detroit Rock City", also has an upcoming movie called "But I'm A Cheerleader!", in which I believe she will play a lesbian...it stars Natasha Lyonne (also her co-star in "Detroit Rock City"!), Clea Duvall, and Michelle Williams among others." Release should be sometime after DRC.

Turns out the Internet Movie Database has a listing for this one already. Not much there, but there is this brief plot outline:

Plot Outline: A naive teenager is sent to rehab camp when her straitlaced parents and friends suspect her of being a lesbian.

Foreign Correspondents' L.A. Premiere

Here's a review/account by Lawrence Ladao of the "World Premiere" of Foreign Correspondents, the upcoming independent film directed by Mark Tapio Kines and featuring Melanie Lynskey. It was held Feb. 17, 1999 in North Hollywood, CA.

Great Melanie Article/Interview

Greer Mundie contributed this fantastic article from NZ's PAVEMENT magazine. An extensive piece about Mel's career since HC, the recent upsurge in roles and offers, and how she's handling it all.

Melanie Lynskey to appear in new KISS movie

It's true! Juliana Bastos <jbastos@usp.br> forwards this description of Detroit Rock City, as seen at www.kissasylum.com:

"Detroit Rock City is the story of four teenaged boys - Edward Furlong (American History X, Pecker), Guiseppe Andrews (Independence Day), Sam Huntington (Jungle2Jungle) and newcomer James De Bello - whose quest to see KISS in concert is thwarted by a vigilant, ultra-religious mom, but only long enough to send them scrambling through a series of impish misadventures that usher them in to manhood and, ultimately, Cobo Hall, where they finally bask in the glow of their idols. The film also stars Natasha Lyonne (The Slums of Beverly Hills), Lin Shaye (Something About Mary), Melanie Lynskey (Ever After) and Shannon Tweed (No Contest). A "sweet, kind of edgy adventure comedy with KISS," this coming-of-age story indeed seems to have it all, and Hamilton is, in the words of associate producer Tim Sullivan, " the gold at the end of the rainbow."

Jackson to Helm Tolkein Trilogy

(August 30, 1998) - "It's all arranged!" Peter Jackson's next production will be an ambitious three-picture dramatisation of J.R.R. Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings". Click here to read the press release from New Line Cinema in its entirety.

Jackson's Impact on NZ Economy

Here's an item that appeared in the IMDB's StudioBrief on November 24, 1998:

RINGING IN A NEW MOVIE ERA IN NEW ZEALAND?

New Zealand officials predicted today (Tuesday) that the production of director Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy will make a significant impact on the country's economy. Appearing at a news conference with government representatives, Jackson said, "Surely this project will demonstrate that a healthy New Zealand film industry has earning potential to rival any of our top industries." Jackson's comments were reported in today's Wall Street Journal.

Melanie Harvests Plum Role in "Cherry Orchard"

(March 6, 1998) - Here's some great news... straight from Mark Kines, director of Melanie Lynskey's upcoming film "Foreign Correspondents".

"Melanie has just been signed to play the lead role of "Dunyasha" in a new screen adaptation of Chekhov's classic drama "The Cherry Orchard." Greek director Michael Cacoyannis, best-known for his Oscar-winning film "Zorba the Greek" starring Anthony Quinn, is helming.

"I don't know anything else about this film, except that it's an independent European production with a budget of $5 million, and that production begins very soon, perhaps sooner than April. Mel's in London now for costume fitting. I don't know if she's staying with Kate Winslet but it's possible; the two have become close friends again."
