Help me run for City Council!
I haven’t emailed in a while, but I am now attempting something pretty big – and to do it, I’ll need your help.
I want to run for Vancouver City Council in October.
As most of you know, I feel a deep connection to Vancouver and I’m passionate about a lot of civic issues, with heritage preservation being a major one. But I also worry – like many – about the future of Vancouver, its skyrocketing housing costs, and the loss of thriving businesses due to the pressures of development. I’ve written letters, signed petitions, and been active in at least two groups who were trying to restore and revive local heritage buildings and community venues – the Pantages Theatre and the Hollywood Theatre. But I’m tired of “battling at the barricades” – I want to try to attain a position where I can have some real influence.
So I’ve applied to seek a nomination with the Vancouver Green Party. Adriane Carr has represented the Greens on council for two terms now, and I think she’s done a great job and shown real integrity. I like everything the Greens stand for. And getting elected as an independent in Vancouver is extremely difficult without support of a civic party – so I would be honoured to run as a Green.
But I need your help.
In a nutshell, the way I gain the nomination is by a vote of the party membership, to be held on the evening of Wednesday, May 30. So, I need as many people in attendance who are prepared to vote for me (on a ballot which will decide the entire roster of candidates). It will be a competitive contest for a limited number of nominations. While I will have the opportunity to speak briefly and make my case to the assembled membership, I can only succeed by bringing many supporters.
So, if you’d like to see me on the ballot, here’s what I need you to do:
Some important fine print: you have to be a resident of Vancouver and an eligible voter in the October election (I realize some of you are not), and you must become a member before April 15, as there is a two-week minimum requirement for members voting at the nomination meeting.
If that fine print didn’t exclude you… click here to join the Green Party!
Thanks so much!
