Hearing there might be costumes at the Simpsons Movie premiere at the Rio, I said to myself, “what Simpsons character could I dress as on short notice?” And I surprised myself by answering back almost instantly, “why, Disco Stu, of course!” So the two of us hauled out all the disco duds ‘n accessories that have languished for a long while in my closet. I may not be shy but I did want to hedge my bets in case nobody was in costume… so I brought my Stu stuff in a bag with me, remaining in my regular clothes until I’d scoped out the scene. Things were pretty quiet, and no other costumes, so I held back for a bit. But when I bumped into my friend Chris (a fellow volunteer with Vancouver Rape Relief’s Housefunding committee) at the show, I was emboldened to go for it. Actually, let’s face it, I was gonna don the duds sooner or later – who was I kidding? And so, Disco Stu sprang out on the scene! People seemed to get a kick out of it – lots of smiles all around as I went around spouting Stu-isms, which basically means referring to myself in the third person. “Disco Stu is ready to boogie!” I knew I was a hit when the theatre management brought me a free bag of popcorn! Wow! Disco Stu loves free popcorn!
