Calling all retrophiles! Join me for an afternoon in 1960
On Sunday, March 28, the VanCity theatre is presenting “Do Not Adjust Your Set: CBC Vancouver TV 1960“. It’s a condensed sampling of a day’s worth of programming from our local TV outlet in that year, introduced by CBC’s Vancouver archivist Colin Preston.
From the VanCity Theatre site: “Our blast from the past includes the popular music series Meet Lorraine, The 7 O’Clock Show, Here and There, children’s programming, and a news bulletin, all with a distinctly local flavour.”
What a rare and fun opportunity to take a trip in time, back to the “Mad Men” era as it was right here in Vancouver. I propose to build on that screening and make a 1960 afternoon of it.
There are two shows, at 1:30 and 4:30. I’ve booked a ticket to the first one. I propose a ride in my Rambler (admittedly 3 years too new, but who’s quibbling) to The Templeton Diner for lunch, or meet me there. It’s at Granville just north of Helmcken (here’s a map). Then we can walk two blocks over to the VanCity and take in the show at 1:30.
MOST important: let’s dress the part: jackets, white shirts and skinny ties for the men, and skirts, kerchiefs (and maybe even some cat’s eye glasses) for the ladies! I can provide extra skinny ties if needed. Let’s dress in our Sunday best – like they did that era of real style and sophistication. (OK, in many ways it was also rigid and regressive, but let’s celebrate the best aspects!)
But be warned. With the right clothes and the right mental state, we might really end up in 1960. That method worked for this fellow.
If you’re up for it, buy your ticket promptly and let me know. I can pick people up if they’re not too far off the route (Oak/12th to downtown), if it helps.
See you in 1960!
